COLUMBUS, Ga., April 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Aflac, the leading provider of voluntary insurance at the worksite in the United States, insuring more than 50 million people worldwide, announced today its corporate giving for the treatment and research of childhood cancer exceeded $87 million in 2013. This figure incorporates funds that have been given by the company, its independent sales force, employees and through fundraising conducted at various events and social media programs since 1995. The news was reported in the company's 2013 Corporate Citizenship Report, published today on Aflac.com.
Aflac has made childhood cancer its primary philanthropic cause since 1995 when the company began its sponsorship of the Aflac Cancer Center, a leading treatment and research center in the fight against childhood cancer. The company has recently set a new goal to reach the $100 million milestone by the end of 2015 and will maintain its commitment to continue fighting childhood cancer until a cure is discovered. In 2013, Aflac generated nearly $10 million for childhood cancer, including its independent sales agents who continue to voluntarily give more than $425,000 every month from their commission checks.
"Our independent sales agents deserve recognition for their selfless contributions to our company's ongoing efforts to eradicate children's cancer," Aflac Chairman and CEO Dan Amos said. "They contribute because they care, and like everyone at Aflac, they anxiously await the day when their generosity is no longer needed and every child has a long and fulfilling life, away from the fear of cancer."
