Aflac helps hospitalized children “sea” the magic of the South Carolina Aquarium
The road to recovery for many hospitalized children will now be filled with frequent stops — to watch frogs jump, turtles dive and otters swim! With support from Aflac, children in select hospitals across South Carolina will experience the magic and wonder of the South Carolina Aquarium without ever leaving their hospital rooms.
Connecting with nature
Using in-room technology, children will lead a robot — located at the aquarium in Charleston — on a virtual visit. With the help of an aquarium educator and guide, children will use the robot to connect with nature, learn about the ecosystems of our world and interact with aquarium guests. As they watch sharks glide through the water, they can say hello through the robot to aquarium guests or wave to children who are on school field trips.
Comfort and joy for hospitalized children
Virtual aquarium experiences will help provide extra comfort and joy during patients’ treatments, long stays or in their free time at the hospital. The program has begun at Medical University of South Carolina’s Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in Charleston and will soon expand to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital in Columbia and Greenville.
“Whether it is through our award-winning My Special Aflac Duck® program for children with cancer and sickle cell disease or initiatives like this, providing comfort and joy to kids who are going through medical challenges represents our commitment to be there for families in their times of need,” said Bob Ruff, senior vice president, Group Voluntary Benefits.
