On Feb. 21, 2024, the cyber event reported by Change Healthcare, a company that assists healthcare providers with claims submissions and payments, has created a significant impact to health care providers, including hospitals, individual practitioners, practice groups, diagnostic centers, laboratories, and pharmacies. We have determined Aflac’s primary operations are not impacted. Further, Aflac and its subsidiaries do not have any direct connection to Change Healthcare systems in any of Aflac’s systems or applications. At this time, we are not aware of any impact to customer data but we are monitoring for any communications from our critical third-party suppliers. While Change Healthcare’s cyber event was not directed at Aflac, we will provide flexibility with claims submissions related to this incident should it be needed. If you believe you have a claim impacted by Change Healthcare’s event, please contact Aflac at 800-992-3522.

Aflac Voices — Ines Rodriguez Gutzmer: Working for a company with a heart and soul

By Ines Rodriguez Gutzmer, senior vice president and chief communications officer, Aflac Incorporated

Growing up in Buenos Aires — my father in the military and my mother a devoted catholic and very kindhearted parent — I learned the balance of disciplined, hard work and having a deeply compassionate heart. As a military family, we lived in various places around the world, and I was fortunate to continue that at different points throughout my career. I treasure the path I had — after all, it led me to where I am today — but the decision I made before my last move is perhaps the most important one of my career. I told myself that the next company I called home would be one “with a soul,” and I found exactly that in Aflac.

Aflac’s culture is centered around care and can be seen — and felt — in many ways within the company, throughout the community and with our policyholders. And I’m not alone. In fact, several employees have shared their own stories about what drew them to a career with Aflac — like O’Shea Guillory, a miraculous mom who bravely took on sickle cell disease and won, and Brian Teague, whose young son beat cancer and looked toward the stars.

Perhaps the clearest expression of care, and one of the things that attracted me to Aflac the most, is our long-standing commitment to supporting children and families facing cancer and blood disorders. In 28 years, Aflac has donated more than $181 million to the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and we’ve given more than 29,000 My Special Aflac Ducks®, cuddly robotic companions designed to provide comfort and joy, and help mitigate the anxiety that children and parents experience when facing cancer or sickle cell disease treatments.

Additionally, when I joined the Aflac flock almost five years ago, I immediately noticed that our commitment to care extends even further. I saw that our incredible employee volunteers go above and beyond for their communities and those in need — in fact, in 2023, Aflac employees spent nearly 10,000 hours volunteering to help others. I even got to join them last year in the phone bank at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center WSB Care-a-Thon.

Take a look at the emotional moments we captured:

As National Volunteer Month comes to a close, I want to share my appreciation for Aflac and my colleagues for all that they do to ensure the communities we serve are truly cared for. As someone who was raised to be passionate about giving back, it is so empowering to be surrounded by others who feel the same.

And, for those who are about to graduate and enter the workforce, or those who are considering a career change, I encourage you to look inward first. Explore who you are at your core and what values are most important to you, and search for a company that shares and demonstrates an active commitment to those same values.
